More official lists!
I find I often don't watch films because they are not on official watch lists, important films that are on many great lists that have not been made official yet. I hate letting this control my viewing and have been trying to fight it, watching films that are not official and then find that I'm falling down the chart. I just think that a real lover of cinema should not be limited to so few films. So, MORE official lists!!! It is the lists that brought us to this site, not social features, even though they are nice also. :)

We’re always looking for new lists, so I’ll set this to planned! :)

Thanks for putting your finger exactly on what is most valuable - and useful - about ICM. It's also important that ICM's criteria for what makes a list "official" become more visible and the process of selection more transparent.

Timec added this Latin American list to iCM a few days ago: Cien años sin soledad: The Greatest Latin American Films of All Time
It was based on a 1999 poll of 36 experts and it looks like a great choice for adoption (better than the list I mentioned earlier imo). Since the Cinema Tropical list only includes 2000s films, it would be nice to have an official list for the older Latin American films.

It's been 5 months since the last batch of adoptions. I think it's time for some new official lists (especially country lists). I think some obvious choices for adoption are:
Film magazine's Best Iranian Films
Polish Film Institute's 100 Years of Polish Cinema
Golden Foundation of Czech and Slovak Cinema
Contracampo's Top Brazilian Cinema
Nickel Odeón Top Spanish Films
100 Films of Latin American CinemaAlso it would be cool if you could adopt Harvard's experimental list, as well as the iCM Board's Favorite Movies with <400 checks, and maybe also the Annecy list (we need a better list of animated shorts).

I like to use iCM to tell me whether a film is likely to be worth watching and agree with Thorkell when he suggests that iCM finds more lists. This seems to be especially important in view of the recent problems with the IMDb lists - they are a large number of the iCM official lists but should be replaced with something more reliable. anne_f_

i agree with this suggestion. today i look for the sight & sound list but i couldnt find it. today they will announce the new list. if this list not on the site it should be a must forexample (if it is on the site could someone share the link?). they are the oldest one as i know since 1932. and again as i know they announce the new list every 10 years according to nearly 1000 critics directors shortlists

If you're referring to the IMDb Documentary list, Forrester, I wouldn't consider that proper.

I'm fine with more documentary lists. Now there's only one documentary list.

No, we don't and yes we need one! :)

Come to think of it, do we still not have a proper documentary list?

+1 to under-represented countries and genres.

Agree with the last two comments!

Ideally, it would be preferable to have newer lists concentrate on cinema that isn't already present in quite a few of the existing official lists. New countries or underrepresented areas. As of now, there are already way too many that have significant overlap.

I'd also like to see more official lists, especially more Academy Awards lists (Best Actor/Actress, Director, Animated Feature, Documentary, etc).

Especially lists covering some under-represented areas, i.e more country and genre lists.

I never said that I can't watch any other movie. I said: "I hate letting this control my viewing and have been trying to fight it, watching films that are not official and then find that I'm falling down the chart."
I find the game of climbing up the chart fun. I usually have about 100 films on DVD/Blu Ray I want to watch and I'm often tempted to pick a film that is on an official list rather than a one that is not, because of the game. I do not however limit my self to an official lists, as any one who would have bothered reading the comment would have realised.

You describe yourself as a "real lover of cinema", but can't watch any other movies than those other tell you to see?

At least the lists made by the unofficial ICM forum should be official.
